UP Rocket Train
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 21, 2005 8:07 AM
Does UP still provide "Rocket Train" from Utah to Florida? I have not seen any
recent pictures of the train (2004-2005). Has/have they gone to a more discrete
way of transporting the rocket motors to Florida since 9/11?

Thank you.

Well there have no manned space flights for almost 2 years now which maybe the reason you have seen no pix of the UPRR "rocket" train. [:o)][:D][:p]

You should see the highway rig that they use to move the shuttle motors to the rail loading facility in Corrine UT. No way can that be considered discrete. It is about a lane and a half wide and has more axles than a GM assembly plant!

While it is possible to move such a large/heavy load by highway, my friends in the oversize transport business indicate that it could only average about 40 to 60 miles per day.

In my day it was called "hi & wide" loads. Naturally it could only move on double track when no train was on the other track. [:o)]
