Yes that locomotive in that picture has some major problems, and I'm sure the EPA wouldn't be a bit happy with that NS locomotive. No I should re phrase that statement that locomotive has lots of major problems. I'm sure glad I'm not the mechinest, fixing that rolling hazard! LOL.

Last time I saw one that good was about 15 years ago out in AZ on the Sunset where a brand spanking new SP GE unit (one of 7 SP "helpers", 2 of which actually worked by the time we rolled into LAUS--both ATK pooches were long dead) blew its turbo and died.

That's not a diesel engine, it's really a steam engine that some locomotive shop worker just hung diesel-like sheet metal on! If you get reallllllllllllllllllllllllllll close, you'll hear the puffing of the cylinders and watch out for the steam!

Today is April 11? That's as good as April 1, right? ;-)

I have NEVER seen a diesel belch that much smoke in all my life! Pretty heavy even for a steam engine. In fact, I have never seen a steam engine puff that much smoke in all my life. I was born in 1932.

How far could this loco go with this problem? What else could or would happen next if left in this condition? [?]

it can go a while...its more of an issue of the engin running rich... incomplet combustion...its not a major mechanial brakedown issue...its not much differnt then the big billowing clouds of blue smoke you get out of an EMD that sits around a long time.... im sure it will play hell with the injectors after a while with carbon build up...and possably clogging up some air intake fulters...but all and all...its just more an eye sore then an worry... you just go with it untill your run is done..and pass it off to someone else...at some point it will end up at the shop..and maybe fixed....

Now I have read stories about steam engine engineers getting into trouble when they were pulling a train and leaving town. It they made too much smoke the ladies would call and complain about the smoke and cinders getting their clean laundry (hanging on the closeline) dirty. When pulling into a yard wouldn't someone notice a loco making this much smoke and bad order it?
