HazMat cards to stay

(From the UTU Web Site).

(This item was distributed April 8, 2005, by The Associated Press.)

In a fit of rationality, the new Secretary of Homeland Security announces that vehicles hauling hazardous materials will still be placarded. He acknowledges that the cards may make it easirer for a terrorist to identify contents and cause trouble. However, the need for first responders to have immediate information on hazardous contents and their safety is of greater concern.

Glad to hear that someone has finally pulled their head out.

And here's why we need them!!!! This happened less than a mile from downtown St Paul last Wednesday. Fortunately they were empty.

I dare say that are are far more documented incidences of accidental wrecks involving hazmat cars than there have been terrorist attacks involving railroad hazmat cars. It's definitely good to see common sense prevailing in the government.
