It's more like a "You say Po-ta-to and I say Po-tat-o" thing rather than a mistake or anyone being in error. EMD (and most of the railfan community) use the term DDA-40X. That's fine; I even have an "EMD DDA40X Maintenance Manual". However, the UP Mechanical Dept has always used the term DD40X (no 'A'), that's the term we in the mechanical dept. used and it still ruffles me a bit ( [:D] ) to hear folks talking about DDA40Xs.

The same goes for more recent stuffs...like AC4400CWs. That's what GE calls them and that's what they use on all of their service and maintenance literature. The UP calls them C44ACs (or C60AC, C44ACCTE, C45AC, etc.). Is that wrong? Nope; it's just a different outlook/spin on things, that is all. If I was master of my own little railroad, I could take a GP7 and classify it as a 57' Chevy Four-Door Hardtop or a 777, complete with the appropriate model designation decals! :)

As a side note, the model designation decals are made by a graphic design outfit in Omaha and are then supplied to the folks at the system shops in renumbering kits (complete with decals, AEI tags and E-PROMs for the OBTs) tailor-made to individual units. They made have made a little glitch that put the 'T' on the rear. [:)]

The SD40-2 had three different length nose, all on the same frame along with the SD45-2 with the whole cab moved forward....Snoots on ATSF also had the moniker of "honorary alligators"....When they started showing up on ATSF, it meant the end of the F3B, F7B RCE repeater cars ....Off the top of my head, the nose lengths were like 54", 72" and 102" all stuffed on the68'10" frame.

UP's "snoots" had their own designation: SD40-2L. As Locotrol advanced, the equipment got smaller. EMD had no further need to make the capacious short hood.

The SD45-T2 and SD452-T are the same. I know that their is an SD40-T2, not SD402-T

The longer noses on UP33xx and ex SP83xx were to acomodate the early locotroll remote gear. The longer noses were to house the gear for the slave units. Santa Fe also had some SD40-2s with it too. They were nicknamed the snoots.

1. The SD45-2T and th SD45T-2 are the same locomotives. It is probably just different spelling designations like there is with the AC4400s on different railroads.
2. Some older locomotives had remote controls in their noses which accounts for the longer noses. Anyone else feel free to correct this information if it is inaccurate.

For #1, it's probably just misspelled. Should be SD45T-2 for the larger of the two tunnel motors, SD40T-2 is the other.

I'm not sure about the length of the noses. I'm guessing it's about the unit's design.

1 what is the diffrence if any between an SD45-2T & SD45T-2 are these the same just misspelled or is there a diffrence

2 why do some locos have longer noses than others like UP 3300-3301
