I agree with the person above me. Best is in the opinion of the person at the throttle, or looking at the balance sheet, or the maintainence man trying once again to reach that part that is always breaking that is under and behind everything else. I, personally like to here a solid set of SD40-2's, and where I am from, that means high hood ex Southern units on local freights.
Take opinions as they come, then formulate your own. That's your right and perogative, but above all, have fun with the hobby, and enjoy discussions and debates with each other.

But then how does one define the "best"? Railroad management, railroad workers and railroad enthusiasts all have different perspectives.

I can't believe everyone has been duped by this article. It wasn't about the 10 best, it was about ten diesels that changed railroading. I have asked for and have been graciously granted a refund for this issue because it was misleading.

That said;
No.1 has to be the EMD SD40-2 w/extended range dynamic brakes.
No.2 GP40 put two of these together with....
No.3 SD45 and youv'e got your self a high speed powerhouse!

I have to agree with Terry. The SD40-2 and the old reliable GP38-2's will be around longer than any other modern diesel. They just keep going and going.

I just read the article and I couldn't agree more except I have a question. A coment was made that the DASH-9 was cheaper than the competitive SD70M. Would not the SD75M be the competition rather than the lesser HP SD70M?

SD 40's and GP 38's. They are like well worn gloves. You know what to expect out of them and what they will give you in performance.

Great edition of TRAINS, loved it. You were close to my feelings on top ten diesels, but feel you should have listed two more. The F45/FP45 are on my list as well as the DDA40X of UP. You can easily see I am a cowl lover. Jim Shaw, Aurora, IL

For performance and reliability, mark me down for SD40-2's! OK, now which ones sounded the best? My vote, E8's with twin 567's! Second, FM H24-66's. gdc

I only know trains by watching them and what I have picked up, but this was a great article. I learned a great deal and Brownie the Boomer was a laugh-out-loud great column.

I just got the issue in the mail yesterday. I must say, the top ten/worst ten, hit the nail right on the head! While there wasn't an author listed, who ever was responsible for that fine article, their next drink is on me... Great job fella's!!!
