An Empty Westbound Hopper on the UP Pulled 2+0 had the UP6698 West.
They where pulling a brand New Hoppr with letters CAEG on them.
Anyone know what CAEG means?
I was thinking California Energy & Gas.

All i know is that those hoppers were made in Danville, IL and pulled out of Johnstown America by a CSX yard crew. We send them north to Chicago then west to Wyoming for coal. The loaded coal drags were run by SOO line crews (CP), but are now run by CSX crews out of Chicago where the INRD crew jumps on at Danville and takes it south to a huge power plant in Sullivan, IN. The power plant can handle three trains at one time.

Eric is right--if they were operated by a private company, their reporting mark would end in "X".

In this case, CAEG is assigned to the Coffeen and Western Railroad, a line that was probably spun off from a Class One railroad, and remains solely to service the power plant at Coffeen, Illinois..
However, the initials used probably are based on the name of the power company, Ameren Energy Generating Company.

Nate, do you remember the number series of the new gons from Danville? I've seen new ones in the CAEG 24000 series, but they've been around for a while now.

There are also some older CAEG gons, relettered from CIPX reporting marks within the past year. CIPX was assigned to Ameren Energy Generating Company most recently; that was previously the Central Illinois Public Service Company.

Carl,

Honestly I can't remember the numbering of those cars. And, I can't believe I forgot about "X" being private cars and non "X" cars belonging to RR's. I knew better than that, but oh well. I have seen the following initials come out of the plant..... PGNX, BNSF, CAEG, and several others that I cannot recall at this time.
The plant at Danville has been spewing out cars as fast as CSX will let them. The plant can produce about 25 cars per day, but what ends up happening is the plant is filled up with about three trains worth of new cars that can't go anywhere because there is no avialable power to take the new train to where it needs to go, usually north. Sometimes cars aren't pulled out of that plant for weeks. When power does show up I often wonder if it can even be used for road service.
