Minnesota Train Watching
Posted by coborn35 on Monday, March 28, 2005 4:13 PM
Next week, I am going (hopefully) railfannign for two days all around Minnesota and am wondering if you guys could help me out. I live in Duluth so no need to tell me about the surrounding areas and I am a DMIR nut so no need for that either but could you help me out on some other areas, i.e. Grand Rapids,Ely etc... Thanks in advance for all your help!!!

If you want a lot of fast action, find anyplace along the East or West Staples Subdivision. This would be from Northtown yard in Minneapolis up Hwy 10 to St. Cloud and continuing next to Hwy 10 to Dilworth (just east of Moorhead). Upward of 35 or 40 trains a day in a lot of double track area. Bring a scanner if you have one too, there are segments where trains need a warrant and you can keep up with where they are.

Feel free to email if you have any specific questions!

The Railroad Club at the University of MN has an excellent page with information on MN railroads.

Matt Frahm has been running an emailing list, MNRail, for several years. It's now part of the Yahoo groups: http://groups.yahoo.com/ .

There are several regulars there that have been more than happy to help fellow fans.

Most of the best places in the state are around the Twin Cities. Are you coming down here?

Well if you do get down here, and you want company or a guide, email me. I just need a good excuse to go out and watch trains. By the way, weekdays are better than weekends, more action.

I've been hearing some very good things in the North Yard University Avenue area. Like Big Boys says, it's all at the Twin cities area.
