Any Tunnel motors left on UP?

Any Tunnel motors left on UP?

Today i observed the CN train entering the Salem Illinois yard powered by a non-db Sd 40 and a CEFX sd-40t-2 (a snoot at that) and I got to wondering if there are any tunnel motors left running under UP ownership. Have also seen these units on the TP&W at Peoria last summer.

Just came back from a revisit to previous home in Pueblo,CO. It was like a living museum: tunnel motors, SP units, and even some Rio Grand. Appearantly UP does'nt repaint anything! Lawrence.

I think they (UP) does have some tunnel motors around. I don't think they have any of the SD45T-2's on the roster. They were known for having problems, I think cank shaft. On their website http://www.uprr.com there should be a way to look at the locomotive roster. I have seen some of the SD40T-2's a couple years ago, in SP and UP colors.

Yes, UP still has tunnel motors. There are still a few working hauler service out of Roseville. As a matter of fact, UP is putting new prime movers in some SD45T-2s and calling them SD40T-2s, I am assuming that is what they are doing. All of the these locomotives I have seen (45 to 40) are in the UP 2800 series. The 2700 series I have seen are SD40M-2 and the 2900 series I have seen are SD40T-2s that started out as SD40T-2s.

Thanks ericsp. I was pretty sure they did has tunnel motors. I've always enjoyed seeing them on the different trains.

Somehow I don't know if I will get used to seeing them in Union Pacific colors having seen them in Southern Pacific and Rio Grande colors. I'm just happy they're out and about.

The Duluth,Missabe, and Iron Range Railway in Duluth,MN took alot of the SP and SSW tuneel motors and repainted them so if you want to see some tunnel motors hauling for all they are worth, come up to Duluth,MN!

Very good coborn35. There for a lot of years it was only DRGW and SP and SSW that had tunnel motors. These are my favorite locomotives. It's good to see them owned by other railroads. IMO they have always been known to be able to work hard.

I agree the tunnel motors are my favorites too. I've come to terms with the merger but it still turns my stomach to see a tunnel motor or a GP60 in armor yellow. It just aint right.

Hey Chad, I don't know if you've had a chance to ride in a tunnel motor, but if so they're a real nice ride. Just something about a six axle unit makes for a more comfortable ride. The crews I know aren't much on the way GP60's ride. Sharp lookin' units are the GP60's.

Scarlet and grey or black and orange on a tunnel motor looked a lot better than armor yellow.

Yes, I have ridden on a 83xx SD40-T2 "snoot" and a 68xx SD40-T2.
I worked on a wreck clean-up on the Modoc line. It was several miles from the nearest road access. In addition to shuttling to the wreck site and back (several times a day to clear the main for passing trains). I was charged with making the run to town to get lunch every day. The engine would leave the train and run light to the nearest town (Canby) and I and one of my friends would load up all the lunches and drinks, 50 or so, and then return. And this was on jointed rail.

I've never ridden a GP60, but to me they are the hot rods of the fleet.

They are saving $$$$ by not repainting. That way they can double track the Sunset Route, unplug El Paso & build the connector from the BNSF to the UPRR @ Edlestein IL [:o)][:I]

Actually since the SPRR had a considerable amount of them there must a few here or there on the UPRR system. [:p][:)]
