ALCo Questions.....
Posted by AlcoRS11Nut on Thursday, March 10, 2005 7:27 PM
Here are some ALCo questions I have....
-what was the Spec #, Prime Mover, and Horse Power for a DL-535E?
-what ever happened to the Princes of Agegian Court?
-what happend to the M-640?
-Were any of the three C-855's preserved?
-Does the Minnesota Commerical still have the last two RS-27's?

Any one that could help me....that would be VERY VERY helpful....I am about to get ulcers trying to figure these things out....(kidding), I just really like to know.

THANKS!!!!
I love the smell of ALCo smoke in the Morning. "Long live the 251!!!" I miss the GBW and my favorite uncle is Uncle Pete. Uncle Pete eats Space Noodles for breakfast.

Hi there. The only question I can help you with is the werabouts of the m640. It's happily preserved at the CRHA museum at Delson St Constant in Montreal.Last I heard it's still operational as well. Cheers Rob

Stats on the DL535E are available here:

http://www.whitepassrailroad.com/company/diesellocomotives.html

down at the bottom. Alco builder numbers except for a lone MLW. Engine is 251D with 1200 hp.

None of the 855s survived. (Neither did the hydraulics.)

The Princess of Agincourt is preserved in a museum in Canada.

Both of the last 2 RS-27's is still listed as servicable on the MNCR RR. Nos.316 and 318.( Railfan and Railroad, July 2004 issue.)

What happened to the M-640? (chuckling to myself)
You mean apart from breaking its crankshaft on the day it was first publically shown!
It was converted to an early prototype for AC traction motors, being converted to a four motor, six axle unit (A1A-A1A). After that it wasn't really useful as an operating unit, and I believe it was scrapped.

The Alco 251D was only made as a six cylinder inline engine running at 1200 rpm and was only used in the variations of the model DL-535. It had air to air intercooling, a feature only introduced to standard US locomotives by the recent GE GEVO engine in the ES44AC/DC. A large number of DL-535s of two versions are now used in Argentina mainly by ALL (America Latina Logistica) where they are used for main line freight traffic.
