According to the Whittier Daily News website,a UP train derailed today, near Pioneer Blvd. and Los Nietos road. They suspect vandalism,as a switch was apperently thrown under a moving train. This is heavy gangbanger territory.

KNX radio "broke in" with this news late this afternoon (a little before 6 pm). There was no mention of vandalism on that particular broadcast and I have not heard any updates.
This is just 1/2 block from the BNSF TRanscon crossing of Pioneer, but I don't think the UP derailment had any impact on BNSF (There are two separate UP-BNSF diamonds within a mile of that area).

I hadn't heard about the "1st derailment" in Industry until I saw the paper. Too much radio coverage of celebrity trials consuming time normally devoted to "real news".

Hmm....seems they're turning up the derailments. well there goes the 1 every 2 weeks they normally have, they've stepped up to 1 a day.

Is that not near where the commuter rail/UPRR/SUV accident took place?

No; entirely different line. The January Metrolink collision was north of LA near Glendale, on the former SP. Tuesday's derailment in Industry was on the UP Salt Lake Route; Wednesday's UP derailment was on a former SP/Pacific Electric remnant.
Lots of Uncle Pete's rails in SoCal.

Things happen. Was it bad maintainance because if it was then shame on UP but if it's one of those out of the blue right circumstances derailment, likely not UP's fault than.

Yeah 3 wrecks in as many days, two look to be broken rails, the third in Whittier looks suspicious. half the train stayed on the mainline the other half went onto a siding . If it was gangbangers, then it would have served them right if they got crushed by the ensuing wreckage. Unfortunatly a defective switch is more likely to culprit. There is SO MUCH traffic on these line I suspect we are just seeing a lot of OLD AGE and mainanence deferment catching up with UP. There are stretches of older poorer maintained secondary tracks now used for carrying mainline container trains (albiet slowely) just to get trains out of the LA/Harbor areas. These accidents had basicly shut down UP for a couple days.

Recent news indicates some kid threw the points under the engine while it was stationary over top the switch. He confessed, and there is some indication that they have video.

On a side note here, isn't the conductor suposse to double check the turnouts if they sit idle for a certain amount of time over one, just to make sure something like that didn't happen? doesn't seem like it's be to hard to look down and see if the switch is aligned the proper direction.

I don't think the train stopped.
