FURX on the loco
Posted by traingang on Monday, March 7, 2005 4:36 PM
In the last issue of TRAINS Magazine, I learned that HLCX is a firm that leases locomotives. On the CSX tracks below my office, I also see engines with the reporting mark of FURX. [?]What can anyone tell me about this firm[?]

I can tell you that the company of interest is First Union Rail, and they own a lot of locomotives and freight cars, including many with reporting marks of the operating railroads.

I'm sure that more information could be found at www.firstunionrail.com/ourfleet.html .

FURX's unique paint is the green and gray/silver:

It also seems like they have a ton of ex-BNSF Heritage I SD40-2s with the BNSF removed from the long hood:

I've seen a fair share with full BNSF markings, but they had FURX stenciled on the cab. I'm not sure why BNSF gives these to FURX and then leases them right back!!

Thank you gentlemen--
My 7-year old son is getting to the point where he can recognize the Class I and local paint schemes, but these tutti-frutti assortments of leased engines with the X's on the end of the reporting marks are really throwing him for a loop... and it is a bit of a challenge for me to explain the leasing concept to him at this point.
Our big find this weekend, a Rio Grande loco at the I&O Ford Park yard in Lima.

The only FURX loco's that I have ever seen out this way are old ex-BN engines with the green and black scheem:

It would be cool to see one the Heritage I now and then.
