Questions on Chicago Yards
Posted by Junctionfan on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 9:46 PM
1/What are the names of the BNSF and UP intermodal yards that were recently built and where are they?

2/ Which yards are owned by CN? I know CN has at least 1 from the GT but they must have more now.

Thankyou for any information you can give me.

BNSF - Logistics Park in Joliet Il
UP - I believe it is called Global 3 in Rochelle, Il.

CN:
Markham Yard, ex IC in Markham, Il handles intermodal and flat switching
Glenn Yard, ex IC, ex GM&O handles flat switching
Hawthorne Yard, ex IC on Iowa line is closed I believe
Elsdon Yard, ex CN is closed

I think this is correct, but will stand corrected, if necessary

The newest UPRR intermodal yard is @ Rochelle about a 1 mile or so west of the diamond past where the webcam pix ends. [:D]

Does anyone know if BNSF or the IHB have plans for the old Alcoa Aluminum plant property in McCook? Went by there recently and it's been completely leveled. It has rail access to the IHB and possibly to the BNSF Transcon. It's also not far from the BNSF Q line (via IHB). Also excellent roadway access to I-55. It's big enough to swallow the longest double-stacks whole(maybe 3x2 miles).

I would doubt if the McCook property would be used for rail use. That real estate would be a little more valuable than that.

The former Reynolds property in McCook is being developed as an industrial park. The rail access to IHB would be a major selling point.

I consulted the CORA map and came up with the following other yards. I do not know the current status of these yards, but they are listed:

1. Broadview Yard, former IC Iowa line in North Riverside, near the junction with the IHB main.
2. Crawford Yard, just east of Hawthorne on the Iowa line between Cicero and Pulaski Aves.
3. Bridgeport Yard on the Iowa/GMO line just SW of downtown. This is parallel to the Stevenson Expressway around Ashland Ave. There are always cars there.
4. 27th Street Yard. I have no comment as I know nothing about it other than it is on the old IC mainline. It is shown on the map as as CN/UP facility. It is just south of McCormick Place. I guess I had a little more than "no comment" about it, didnt I?
5. Matteson Yard on the IC Champaign main, on the SE quad of the CNIC/EJE junction.

CORA does NOT list Elsdon as a yard....I think it has been developed.

Seems like the CN has some valuable property in the city with some of those yards.

Is the aluminum plant you're talking about the one that was located a bit south of 47th street, on the south side of the BNSF tracks, at 1st avenue? If so, does anybody know when that plant was last used and what they plan on building on the site now? Would love to know, old stomping grounds...

The 27th street yard may have served the old RRD plant at 22nd St. The freight line went up & over the electric tracks at this point. The plant had daily access to the paper cars that came in. The older south plant off 23rd street was the home of Life magazine, and may have shipped mags by rail in the old days.
RRD had a 44ton switcher to handle the inbound paper, then ship back the iron cores. RRD would also ship back paper to be recycled.

Last I knew Elsdon had all but been redeveloped. From 55th st south, it was turned into a park, then a new school was built. There could have been enough traffic on 55th to build a bridge over the tracks. The Elsdon roundhouse was torn down to make room for a Kmart store. CN did build a lumber transloading facility near 51st. You can see it from the Orange Line. Missing from this list is the old CN/GT Railport truck terminal at 47th.

27th Street was the engine terminal for the passenger trains operating out of Central Station. It was almost solely inhabited by IC E's although I do remember seeing SOO FP7's there when SOO moved from Grand Central to Central for the last months of its passenger operation into Chicago. It was shut down in the late 1960's in favor of running passenger power light from Woodcrest to Central Station to pick up their trains.

Where do you figure does CN transfers intermodal from their Halifax/ Chicago runs. The train numbers are 149 (Chicago bound) and 148 (Halifax bound) just in case you have heard them mentioned on a scanner. If you have seen them, they sometimes use BNSF power. They have a tremendous amount of Hapag-Lloyd containers as well as Tex and ACL brown containers. They sometimes carry domestic containers of CN and Trans X as well as the odd yellow Sunbury containers.

Has anybody seen this? It would be coming in from Sarnia, Ontario/ Port Huron, Michigan tunnel.

Junction:

I either see or hear 148/149 every day here in NW Indiana.

Trains originate/terminate at Markham Yard.

Entering Chicago on the old GTW, at the IC line (call CN Junction), there is a turnout which makes a pretty severe left hand turn and goes up to Markham Yard. This is at MP 23.2.

There is only one lead track at this time from the GT to the IC, thus it can get busy as these trains move pretty slowly. I often hear the dispatcher hold westbounds that are moving into Markham. Often they hold until 148 or 148 clears.

I agree with you on the size of 148/149. Those are monster trains. I am surprized CN hasnt added more intermodal trains. The 148 usually leaves Markham around 8pm or so. Pretty punctual. The 149 usually shows up mid morning to mid afternoon.

What time do they arrive/leave Halifax?

CN is actually kinda refreshing in that most of their trains in/out of Chicago are manifest trains while NS and CSX are mainly intermodal.
