Did Norfolk go out and buy some Aces? I think I seen 2 of them on the tracks today!
They were painted almost a white primer!

NS doesn't have any ACe's, but they have some SD70M-2's on order.

The Primer NS EMD units you are seeing are the final order of SD70M's for NS. They were built toward the end of 2004 before the new tier 2 regulations took effect. NS has ordered 52 of the new SD70M-2's, also known as SD70DCe's. These are expected to be delivered sometime during the second half of 2005. It would be cool to see some Norfolk Southern SD70ACe's though.

Well, as far as external appearance, the AC and DC versions will look pretty much alike. The differences are under the hood. NS prefers DC Power, and the only true DC's it owns are the 17 SD80MACS it inherited from Conrail, and NS uses these primarily on Coal Lines and locals around the Johnstown and Pittsburgh areas of Pa, though there have been some recent sightings of them on a few mainline freights. Some were painted into NS Black, but more recently, more of them are being painted into the newer NS Horsehead Livery as they go into the Juniata Shops for major work. Better yet, some high-short-hood SD70ACe's that run long hood forward!!! [}:)]

Actually, one quick way to tell a SD70M from an SD70M-2, besides the redesigned cab and nose, is the flared radiators. On the newer 70M's, the flare runs to the rear of the unit, like an SD45. On the 70M-2 and 70ACe, the flares look like the style on an 80 or 90MAC, where they end a few feet before the rear of the long hood. Dave Williams http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nsaltoonajohnstown
