Do diesel locomotives use cast or forged pistons and rods in their prime mover? or does it depend on the model or builder. I know in performance cars, forged is preferable to cast.

EMD two-stroke diesel engines use cast iron for pistons and steel forgings for rods. Crankshafts are forged. The cylinder block is a welded fabrication made up of forged, cast and rolled steel sections.

There is a discussion of pistons in Kettering's SAE paper on the development of the 567 engine.
