One rail yard or two?
Posted by Perry Babin on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 9:45 AM

At the following google earth coordinates, I've heard of the rail yard referred to as the Gest yard and the Queensgate yard. Is this two yards?

Is either name correct/preferred?

Gest Street is NS . Queensgate is CSX. Queensgate has morphed as a consolidation of multiple yards in the 1970's. CUT's (Cincinnati Union Terminal's) demise as a passenger operation allowed the expansion of Queensgate from its B&O (CH&D) and C&O beginnings.

As I recall from my time in Cincinnati in the late 1960's - the B&O had multiple yards in Cincinnati - Brighton, Mill Creek, Yard A were the primary yards, there were small support yards at Gest Street and Storrs.  The building of Queensgate totally changed the face to the B&O/C&O in Cincinnati.

My time in Cincinnati was spent working the Opertor's position at Storrs Jct and the Switchtender position at 8th Street under the direction of the Operator at Cincinnati Jct.

Balt:

Did you work west of Cincinnati on the St. Louis line?  I grew up nearly Olney and actually rode the passenger train 3x to St. Louis in the mid to late 60s.

I saw your Clay City photo on the Station Agent thread after asking.

Olney - "Home of the White Squirrels"...still a few of those around, but not as many.  Was back home in July and went to the site of the depot which has been gone for probably 30 years.

Only trains are grain trains on the old IC on south side of town which uses the connecting track.  The IC branch which ran thru my hometown just north of Olney has been gone since about 1996.  The IC and B&O did a little interchange there in Olney.
