Loss of focus...
Posted by ChuckCobleigh on Thursday, August 10, 2023 9:12 PM

So today, Virtual Railfan put up a video from their new camera at Austell, GA, on the west side of Atlanta.

Truck delivering structural steel to a business there makes a left turn across tracks and the signals start up. He wants to make another left turn across traffic instead of just pulling the load straight ahead off the tracks. Bad strategy.

Lack of situational awareness, for sure.  Perhaps he thought all those other drivers who were getting the heck out of the way were doing so in order for him to make his turn.  He was starting to do so when he got hit.

DEFINITELY! Situational Awareness, is the issue...

Recall within the last year;theree was a similar situation(?) IIRC was at a Road Construction site in North Georgia;required a double turning move with a long load.  IIRC the trucking company wound up mowning the trucked load, truck and a couple of NS diesel units, and some of that envolved train(?)

Situatuional awareness, isot somewthing that comes naturally, unfortunately, it must be learned...Generally, the hard way.    [my 2 cents]

Truck driver broke the cardinal rule of Train Dispatching.  Know that you have a place for the movement to go and clear.

Well, first of all, there were three vehicles in a cross-hatched "do not block intersection" area where the driver would go through to make his left turn. If those vehicles are identified, there will be another set of insurance companies fighting things out. Nonetheless, why the driver didn't just pull forward when he had the chance will be the $64 question.

Situational awareness lack may have been the driver's not realizing the load was still fouling the track, or thinking there was still enough time to make the turn. There will be a detailed examination by several entities and maybe something added to the next safety brief. NS legal will have little problem with this case and even better, it looks like the crew rode through without injury.

That intersection is a bit of a mess.  Seeing the lights in front of you and hearing a horn could make one forget that they crossed another set of tracks.

It will be interesting to see how many incidents are captured on the new camera.

Very familiar with that intersection.  The two near tracks are the approach to the big yard in Austell... the one in the background sees Amtrak traffic, which just west in Douglasville runs at track speed...

Well, on today's VR Grab Bag there were several clips from the camera. One interesting one had a police car sitting in and monitoring the "do not block" intersection. Nobody was blocking in front of the cop. Go figure.
