In the spirit of the occasion (Spirit of '76?) here's a little motivational music from the Middlesex County Volunteers.

A have a happy Fourth everyone!

Thanks, Flintlock, and best wishes to you and all my other fellow Americans on this auspicious day.

I was startled to be reminded yesterday that these days also mark the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.  I had no ancestors in the US at that time in history, yet I benefit from the sacrifice of other, earlier Americans, in keeping this country together and free.

In remembrance of that event I offer this YouTube video:

Thanks for that very moving video NKP!

The fact that the veterans of North and South could get over their animosity towards each other is a lesson to us all.

"The First Greatest Generation."  You know, the Civil War vets would blush at that, not that they weren't proud of their service, but the men they  considered the Greatest Generation were the veterans of the Revolution. And believe it or not there were some Rev War vets still living when those Civil War vets were kids!

Just got done working traffic (vehicular) for that quintessential Independence Day activity - fireworks.  A village of just over 5,000 people was stuffed to the gills - every parking place was occupied, some a distance from the waterfront.

It took just over an hour to clear everyone out.  Probably several thousand cars.  A state trooper took over my corner (I willingly gave it up...).  It's amazing how many people have no idea how to react to an officer directing traffic.  I felt his pain - I've directed my share of traffic, too.

On a different note (and a different kind of traffic), once I got home I fired up the ham radio and made another contact (MD) for the "13 Colonies" special event.  The idea is to contact designated stations in all 13 original colonies, plus stations in Philadelphia (WM3PEN), Great Britain, and France.  The stateside stations aren't bad - just have to hit conditions right.  The two overseas are more of a challenge.  I got all but Great Britain last year, and I'm half way through the list so far for this year.  It goes on until the 7th.

In the meantime - I caught the tacos just as I came in the door, so it's time for bed...
