Dorval was and is a great place for railfanning given that both CN and CP run close together and the large number and frequency of trains. One of my favourite spots in the early 80s..MLWs..semaphore signals..F units pulling vintage coaches in commuter service.. VIA with FAs, LRCs...early Conrail with a variety of power.. it was great.
It's one month after our trip to Quebec City, and my dad and I are spending the day railfanning in Dorval.

Thanks. The other thing I was wondering about was Stoneham Ski area. I had heard of Mont Ste. Anne and wondered why you did not go there, but then I heard one of their gondolas fell from the cable, and I guess I would have had second thoughts also.
MidlandMike Until I looked at a map I didn't realize Ste. Foy was across the river from the mainline to Atlantic Canada. Does the Ocean turn the train around at Ste Foy, or back up across the river to continue the journey?

Going eastbound they pull across north and back across south. Going westbound they back across north and pull forward south. Due to the twice-weekly schedule I didn't see either train while I was there.
MidlandMike I took VIA's train to Gaspe about 30 years ago, and its Quebec stop was at Levis. The station was on the river at the ferry landing to the Quebec ferry. I believe that route has been abandoned in favor of the freight bypass. Apparently Ste Foy is now the LD stop for Quebec.

That's correct, Charny station is now Levis' only stop.
Here's day 2 and 3 of our trip.

My family took a mini-vacation to Quebec City in March, and I daresay I did a good job squeezing in some railfanning with minimal impact on the trip's timing...
