Do you like the EMD or the GE on the Point?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 21, 2005 11:36 PM
I know that im a pain but this is a very good place for alot of RR Questions.
I know that alot RRers do not like EMD nor the GE's but what the heck it's a Locomotive.

I see alot of UP SD70M's on alot of Stackers&Trailer Trains Trains.
The manifests seem to have both. But alot more EMD's for some reason unknown. Oh I was wrong! I still do see alot of Mixed Trains with a solid set of AC4400CW's from time to time.
I see that the UP still likes the AC4400CW's on their Coal Trains.
As for the Auto Rack Trains alot of SD70M's and just a few GE's from time to time.
I get the feeling that the UP realy like their SD70M's. So much for the day's of the SD40-2's.

The NS seems to realy like the SD70M's alot on the point.
The CSXT well,.....
And the BNSF on the other hand....They just love their GE's.
Even though it is kinda weard just seeing a Loaded Coal Train with 2 C44-9W's on the Point. Or an SD75M.

But as for my Question.
Railfan or Railroader.
Do you like the GE or the EMD on the Point of a Train?

For some reason unknown I like the GE on the Point.
Even though it realy Doesn't matter anymore of what is on the Point.

Doesn't matter too much to me, but I'm not a railroader. I do enjoy the occasional moment when there's a GE in the consist, that emits a quick burst of flame from the exhaust stack followed by a big black cloud of smoke.

I don't car what train is on the point!! As long as I can see some sort of locomotive on the point of a manifest or a coal drag. . .ect. I do prefer to see EMD heading up a train most of the time, because EMD happens to be my favorit locomotive builder.
Hay I agree w/ ya Chris Helt I do like to see fire come out the exhaust of some of the GE's that go by. However, usually when this happens that is a good indicator that something is terribly worng w/ either one of the following: air to air system, injector tips, injector cups, o rings on the injectors went bad. Most likly when you see black smoke from a diesel it's unburned fuel. This is what happend when there's too much fuel being dumped in the cylinder, the air can't compensate so the air-fuel mixture is srewed up.

I figured as much that if a GE loco is shooting flames out of its stack, something's not right mechcanically. Wonder if it's possible for an EMD to belch fire.

I've never seen an EMD shoot fire from its stack, but it sure looks cool from a GE[8D]!

As long as there are trains with (any) locomotive on the point, I am content and happy.

BNSF railfan--

The reason you see more EMD than GE on the UP is simple. We've got roughly twice as many EMDs! That suits me just fine, 'cause I've always been an EMD fan.

I prefer GE's, because their low growl sounds a lot better than an EMD's high buzz. I also think that DASH-9's look better than SD-70Ms or MACs or ACes.

I am just the opposite of trainjunky29 - I prefer the looks of the EMD. Dash 9's aren't streamlined looking and sound pretty lousy.

I'd like to just simply SEE more locomotives. By the time I hear one and get to the crossing I'm there in time to catch the last 10 cars.

I wish my college would buy the land between the two rail lines and knock down all the buildings and build nothing new so I could watch trains. (Ok, it's more a crazy thought.)

Nice big observation tower, OTOH, would be pretty cool. Put something up about 6 stories tall... That way I could watch trains in all weather and be safe and warm/cool.

I like EMD's on the point. especially SD40-2's. NS will often put SD40-2's on their Strawberry Ridge Coal Trains that run through the Altoona area. Sometimes, they'll add a headend helper of more SD40-2's to this, and anywhere from one to two pair of SD40-2 helpers on the rear. Stand anywhere on the West Slope of that grade....Lilly, Portage, Cassandra, when one of these trains is grinding upgrade .You can often hear the engines working long before the train gets in view. I'll often notice, that on other heavy trains in the same situation, when Dash 9's are leading, I can often hear the rear helpers before I hear the GE;s on the head end....what a sound those SD's make!!! Personally I just don't really mind if GE or EMD is up front, just the rarer the loco the better, and cleaner or dirtier depending on the unit's age.
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]
