Ed will have pictures of Russian inclined-plane railways that lift even fairly large ships where locks would be less practical. I believe in some cases the ships were made in modular sections to facilitate lift.
I have seen at least one drawing purporting to show German Breitspurbahn (3m gauge) carriage of a ship on a specially built car.
