UP paint terms
Posted by bnsfkline on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 1:44 PM
I think everyone here will agree with me that since UP has 3 diffrent types of paint on their locomotives, its getting harder to say Wings, Flags, Wings only, or Standard. Should the schemes of UP be organized like Amtrak's Phase 1,2,3,4 and 5? For Example

UP locomotives that has No Wings, No Flag and No Lightning Bolt should be
Phase 1
UP Locomotives that have UPY Markings should be Phase 2
UP Locomotives that have Lighting Bolt only shoulb be Phase 3
UP Locomotives that have Lightning Bolt and Wings should be Phase 4
UP Locomotives that have Lightning Bolt and Wings and Flag should be Phase 5

Does UP have a similar why to classify paint schemes?

The UP does have "phases" for its paint schemes. It has the standard in effect the engine is painted.
If you want phase 1 you have to go back to the brown and yellow of the 1930's. They have had many many variations since then.

The UP has a history of its heralds on its website.
