North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority Meeting Presentations
Posted by CalRail on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 8:52 PM

Hi all.  I work in the logistics and transportation industry in New Jersey and sometimes get access to interesting rail-related info that is publicly available but not ususally widely distributed outside those in the industry.  The NJTPA is one agency that gets involved in a number of rail-related projects.  NJTPA background:  "The NJTPA is the federally authorized Metropolitan Planning Organization for the 13-county northern New Jersey region. Each year, we oversee over $2 billion in transportation improvement projects and provide a forum for interagency cooperation and public input."  Please click on the below link for real-time insight into New Jersey rail projects.  There is a lot going on.

Thanks CalRail!

It's nice to have a "spy" on hand when I want to see what's up with the home folks!

We moved from NJ 34 years ago, I don't know why I still care about "What's goin' on?" up there, but let's say I still do and let it go at that.

I don't know whether to rejoice or be depressed about the speeding-America-into-the-nineties (the 1890s, that is) enhanced emphasis on carfloat service between... Greenville and Bay Ridge.

Two trips a day with 18 cars each -- that's a whole 288 trucks off the road.  Thank heaven for little blessings!

Where is the Narrows tunnel when we need it most? Smile

Suspect if the present president is re elected that we might see it proposed and financed in the second term.  "IF" Gateway, B&P, Susquehanna bridge, & Long bridge are all financed and under construction.  As well some elimination projects of slow sections of the NEC.

Not to detour too much the tunnel would need to be built to plate "H" electrified 25 Kv with provision to build a future parallel second tube. ( Possible passenger ). The tunnel would be proposed as a major project to lower CO2 emissions in the New York area.

You'd build both tubes together, to plate K.  By that time we should have sensible dual-mode-lite and this might be a sensible place to implement 'diesel-equivalent' cat or other methods, including waterproof inductive power transfer, in the comparatively short tunnel proper.  Fun part will be running the through infrastructure down the east/north shore, especially if new intermodal facilities are built in conjunction with it.

Note that this can constitute a reasonable off-hours alternative for traffic from the south on the NEC to access Penn Station without using a North River Tunnel... it is also a basis for substantial truck-ferry operations (especially for those autonomous electric trucks that happily avoid the great high-insurance zone that is Greater New York whether ultimately going to the Island, New England, or north to Rotterdam...)

Now get the PA to underwrite or subsidize the truck ferry, as saving the need for road/bridge capex or 'infrastructure maintenance'... and then with clear conscience raise the truck cost on the crossings to a proper 'incentive' level ...

Mainly more height for stacking the higher-cube containers. As much of the prospective traffic will include donestic-only intermodal I think it makes sense to design for this.

Hi Flintlock76,

I grew up in N. Calif. as a big fan of the WP and SP - hence my screen name.  After a couple of moves for work, including two years in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, I've now been 29 years in NJ.  I've really come to appreciate the rich rail history of the state.

I'll try to post more info when I get it.
