I would think that by 2040 that battery technology would have advanced enough that an electric/battery locomotive would be good for a couple of hundred miles on battery power alone.

In 2040, indoor data transmission might be done with IR or visible light (Li-Fi). One advantage would be somewhat better security. The "Sidecar" feature with MacOS 10.15 and above along with iOS 14 and above suggests that mobile computers may not need their own display, but make use of whatever display is handy. Another possibility is display integrated with glasses.
