Maybe I can finally log on?
Posted by Murphy Siding on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 11:59 AM

Well, this has been too fun. Over the last week I've reset my password at least 6 times and contacted customer service twice. The quasi-breakthrough came when I was sent a questionnaire about customer service. Note to professionals- never ask the opinions of a disgruntled introvert. I ran out of space on the comment lines.

I then e-mailed a plea to customer service (good luck getting someone on the phone- I did get through once, with no resolution.) I plead for them to reset my password again and let me know that it worked. They did. It didn’t. I sent another e-mail to customer service yesterday. Someone apparently did some magic because it works today.

Note to customer service people across the globe: Telling me that I’m the only person on the face of the earth with this problem so it must be something on my end is not really an answer. However, they did seem to finally get it resolved and for that I’m grateful.

ps. It took 4 tries to get this to work.

The site had been down for a bit over 24 hours, getting a error message whenever I tried to access a thread. Nice to see it up again.

Not having it for a while makes me very appreciative of Kalmbach for providing this forum for us at no cost.

Last night I could sign on, but when I tried to read posts I kept getting errors.  I found that any post I had not read (red title) would get an error, and old posts younger than a few days would get an error, but older posts that I had read would come through OK. I cleared all cookies, but that didn't help.  Today it worked OK.  Wonders of modern technology!

I had the same problem yesterday, too.  Spent some time trying different things to see if it was something silly on my end.  Problem existed no matter how I tried to view a thread so I was fairly certain is was a problem on the server end.

Today, a strange thing occurred.

I am logged into the forum using Internet Explorer in Winders 10.  Selected to open the Rochelle webcam in a new tab.  This normally just opens a new tab and I can view the cam (after closing the advertising overlays).  Today, I got the page showing that the cam is for registered users only.  I had to log-in again to see the cam.   Worked fine, but that is the first time that has happened.

I'll see what happens tomorow when I try it again (I always clear all cache and cookies at the end of the day so I start fresh with everything the next time... I don't mind logging-into every site each day.  "Safety Forced!".)

Spoke too soon - can log in on my phone - not on my main computer, even after deleting the Trains cookies.

Can log in on my W10 lap top not my W10 Desk top.

Desk top cookies for Trains have been deleted - I guess the next step is to delete ALL cookies.  Cookie Monster in shock!!

had the problem early last week.  Unfortunately a windows update wiped all my info including favorites.  That fixed the problem but still having problems with the update.  How I hate IT that does not do proper beta testing. s

Deleting ALL cookies worked - I guess there are some Trains cookies that aren't identified as Trains cookies.

I couldn't stay logged in when opening the forum for about a week. I'd log-in, view the Newswire, and then get logged out when clicking on the forum.

Then yesterday I could stay logged in when visiting, but I'd get an error message when trying to view a forum thread.

Today's the first day it's actually worked as it's supposed to.

Someone apparently did some magic because it works today.

One thing I noticed of interest,  after the problem started yesterday,  all the new content posted yesterday morning disappeared, and all the threads showing "last post" information stated that the most recent post was "11 hours ago" (and older).

WHOOPS!  End of day and I cannot log-out!  Click the '"Logout' link and the screen just blinks.  I will try to clear all cookies and cache and see what happens tomorrow when I turn the cornphewtor on to start the day.

Apparently clearing all cookies and deleting the cache (which I do every evening just before I turn the computer off, using "CCleaner") made the system think I was logged-off.  Seems the Logout link is broke.

Same here.  Been that way ever since the place came back after being down for a day or so.

I am also still having to log-in again when I link over to the Rochelle webcam. It used to know I was already logged-in on the Trains dot com site via the forums.

For a very long time, commenting on one of the 'columns' requires a completely different login from the forums ... but with the same credentials.  The same has been true of access to the Rochelle cam in the times it has not been subscriber-only.  This indicated to me that while the servers may be querying a common database, their persistent storage of credentials is not shared.

I'd have expected 'monetizing the relationship' to involve more and more promiscuous credential sharing, not less; they seem to be enamored of repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot in safeguarding "their" customer relationship data...

I have an odd problem.

I normally use Microsoft Edge as a browser. Normally my password is recorded and I'm logged in automatically. Now I'm not logged in and if I try to log in I just get returned to the not logged in page. I tried manually changing my password, but got a letter case wrong and was told my login details were wrong. When I correctted it I was just back to the not logged in page.

So my password was correct, Edge just can't log me in.

As you will have observed, I'm logged in. I can log in manually on Explorer.

How can one Microsoft browser work and not the other?

Any ideas?

(I cleared cookies in Edge but it made no difference...)

Here  is what happened to this poster.  Had the sign in problem last week .  Contacted customer service but they were no help even changing pass word. Customer service suggesed changing to google chrome.

Then last weekend Microsoft had a big up date where I lost all efforts to diasplay my favorites links.  Display for many things was different and I had to take time to change all passwords and filling the favorites star. Manually typing in any thing on task bar opened up sometimes allowed old favorites show and sometimes new favorites displays.

Then early Thursday morning my old links to favorites sometimes shows and other times the new one shows.  The only difference I can note is on the upper action bar to the right of search the old shows a fourth icon that looks like a house.  If that appears I get the old links however unable to get my e mail.  By manually typing any favorite on task bar then I can link to my e mail.

Otherwise get message saying program does not support email.  So I am wondering if our problems originate from a Microsoft programing problem ?

Sorry for rambling but when same actions have different results it is hard to remember what happened when..
