mergers....

with all this talk (VERY educational and informative talk to me) of the milwaukee, the SP, the UP and so on....going with the late 60's early 70's theme... which western railroad would you pick to merge with which? this doesn't have to be entirely scientific, just an honest opinion. with all of our 20/20 hindsight we can live in fantasy land and go what if, but maybe keep it somewhat realistic.

i don't even know how i'd answer my own question...maybe an SP/Rock Island/Rio Grande for the central and south, Oakland-Denver-kansas city-chicago and LA-chicago. leave the BN how it is/was. santa fe/milwaukee in the north and south. and the UP/CNW.

Regarding SP/ROCK/DRGW, of course SP and DRGW mergered (acutally RGI bought SP). SSW bought the "Cotton Rock" portion of Rock Island. This went from Tucumcari, NM to, I think, Kansas City. DRGW got trackage rights on MP's Kansas Pacific (I think that was the line) from Pueblo to somewhere (I think KC). So, that merger almost happend.

What about west coast and east coast railroads merging?
