More context is really needed. The Gotthard Base tunnels should be a worst case scenario but there not much D&B was needed mileage wise.

This report will highlight some of the possible problems that California HSR might encounter in tunneling toward LAX.
One of the more interesting points of the report was the need to drill and blast ( D&B ) instead of using a TBM except for a few locations. This was due to the large overburden causing deflections of the bore that exceeded normal TBM capabilities.
As well there was 10 different anchoring systems considered with 8 being used. The more robust the support the slower the D&B. To promote safety the contractor drillled geotech pilot holes ahead of actual excavations to anticipate type of rock or soil before actual D&B. Enjoy the reading and be able to understand CA HSR pproblems when it starts the tunneling.
