This perhaps was posted someplace here before, but there's no hope of finding the "Railroad Books" thread, so I'll post this separately:
My cousin gave me the paperback version titled "Iron Horses". Apparently it was previously published as "Rival Rails". I'm only about 2/3 of the way through it, but an excellent account of railroad expansion in the southwestern US - mostly south of a line roughly from from St. Louis to Denver (includgin Kansas) to San Francisco, plus routes into Chicago. There's no doubt that Borneman has the highest regard for the AT&SF, and it's understandable. (Too bad I didn't know this book existed before my trip last fall on the Southwest Chief from La Junta across Raton Pass to Albuquerque, over the Canyon Diablo bridge, and then to Flagstaff.) Anyone interested in railroad construction and surveying would enjoy it. Even has some surprise involvement of PRR officials in the T&P and a projected line to California!

It's also mentioned in one of the comments to this article:

P.S. - Some of the old-timers here may want to check out the author of the D&RGW article linked above . . .
This website got improved. But it retains some of its old charm:
"Iron Horses" / "Rival Rails"
Try typing that into the Amazon search box!
Seriously, though, thanks for the tips.

All you're typing is "Iron Horses" / "Rival Rails" -- the title was mangled by misconfigured software when he edited the post.
I know. I was kidding.
That happened to me once, also.
It's happened to me as well. The original poster can correct it, it's do-able, but Paul has to do it.
Done! Last time I tried to do that - a couple years ago, maybe - it didn't 'stick'! Thanks for the nudge.
