From the Jacksonville Business Journal, an article about alleged price-fixing by the railroads.
If we thought Amtrak's cost accounting was convoluted, I wager this involves even more complexity.

It seems it's not been a great week in the news for railroads.
"From at least the spring of 2003 and continuing until at least 2008, Defendants' top executives met regularly at restaurants and recreational and conference facilities to discuss their industry,"----- Well they should have met at the local corner dive bar
Well, if they didn't want to ship cars on railroads that they felt were using the cost of fuel as a tool to gouge them, they could have shipped them on trucks, whose owners they would have felt were using the cost of fuel as a tool to gouge them.

What I find laughable in these kinds of cases - It is no more than huge corporations suffering the 'slings and arrows' about situations they themselves force on their own customers on a daily basis. The only difference is they are now Joe Blow being 'screwed over' in the same way they screw over their own customers.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Foreign car mfgs with plants in the US must be hard to deal with; as the case of NS and the Honda Plant in Alabama.
So as far as I know railroads are exempt from Anti-Trust law and the Federal Surface Transportation Board regulates them?

Companies know obfuscation in accounting holds answers to questions at bay. Throw in over papering any request for documentation and you make it exceedingly difficult for anyone in search of accurate measures.
