The Goat Canyon Trestle in Carrizo gorge was really cool. I'd like to get a ride over that thing.

It's gone from "the impossible railroad" to the "impassable railroad" in the last 40 years or so.

When I was a lad, it was sugar beets and drywall for local industry plus a daily (maybe) drag between El Centro and San Diego. My father made a few trips between those stations when there was still passenger service; he said it was better than making the trip with a wagon and team of horses, at least.

I'm guessing approximately 35% as service has been sporadic since 1977. Heard that it was running for a year or two in hauling sand. Even scarier is that as much time has passed since the Apollo 12 mission as passed from when the golden spike was driven to Apollo 12.

It seems like the middle of the line has been out of service for almost half that time.
