Headed down to Thurmond, West Virginia this past Wednesday (October 2nd) to watch some trains and take in the beautiful scenery.
Here's the drive down, almost getting stuck when I got to Thurmond:
I'd left home about an hour earlier than I normally do on my trip down, which was a good thing since about an hour after I arrived and walked around the town and out onto the bridge over the New River, a westbound work train appeared to wait for an eastbound loaded coal train. Once the coal train cleared, the work train, which turned out to be a rail train, headed west and started unloading rail past the interlocking. Sometime later, a westbound empty hopper train came past, and then an eastbound hi-rail truck went past.
I'd hoped to see the Cardinal before leaving, but with no wifi or cellular signal, I couldn't get online to check the status. By 8PM, there was no sign of the train, and since it was too dark for pictures and video, I headed home.
While Thurmond might not have the train volume as my trip to Deshler and Fostoria, it was still a beautiful and relaxing trip.
