Deshler, Fostoria, and Bucyrus, Ohio (9/28/19 and 9/30/19)

So this past Saturday, I headed up to Deshler for the afternoon and then headed east to Fostoria for dinner and the evening at the park.  On Monday, I made another trip to my hometown of Bucyrus, although that wasn't intended as a railfanning trip.

As I arrived in Deshler, an eastbound mixed freight was crossing over from track 1 to the southwest transfer track to turn south.  I drove past the park to wait for it at the crossing.  Once it cleared, I circled back around to the park, seeing a westbound train approaching and the signals lined up for an eastbound.

As I parked the Jeep, I heard the westbound intermodal train approaching.  With no time to grab my tripod, I started recording.  As the rear of the intermodal disappeared from sight, and eastbound empty hopper train accelerated past.

Shortly after the empty hopper train disappeared, two locomotives running light came north and stopped short of the crossing before heading back south.  Again, I didn't have a chance to get the tripod.

An eastbound intermodal train heads through Deshler.  As the DPU locomotive on the rear goes past, you can hear that it is in dynamic braking as the train is preparing to stop east of town because the previous eastbound had gone into emergency east of Deshler.

Getting a later start for Fostoria than I'd intended (although I'm not complaining about seeing all of the trains in Deshler), I headed east on State Route 18.  Arriving in Hoytville, I found the crossing blocked by the last train I'd seen turning east at Deshler.  It was partway into the terminal at North Baltimore, and after a few minutes of waiting, it was obvious it wasn't moving anytime soon, forcing me to find a detour.

After getting to Fostoria, I saw that nothing was happening at the moment and called ahead to AJ's Heavenly Pizza in Tiffin to order dinner.  The drive took longer than normal, but arriving back in Fostoria, I was held up at the Poplar Street crossing as an eastbound CSX mixed freight turned north.

In this video, you can see a problem that CSX was having.  A train using the southeast transfer track earlier in the evening had lost air, going into emergency.  According to the crew on the scanner, the locomotives were charging 136 PSI into the brake pipe.  However, the EOT was showing air pressure at 0 PSI, meaning the crew was unable to charge the brake line to release the train's brakes and move.  In this video, track 2 (all-red signals) is blocked by the stalled train.  The dispatcher has lined an eastbound intermodal train on track 1 (approach limited signals) around the stalled freight, and at the crossovers east of town, the train will cross over to track 2 where a westbound intermodal train is holding on track 1.

With the eastbound CSX intermodal now in the clear on track 2, the westbound CSX intermodal heads through Fostoria.

An eastbound Norfolk Southern train of covered hoppers accelerates through Fostoria after waiting for the CSX intermodals in my previous videos.

On Monday, September 30th, I had to make a couple stops in my hometown of Bucyrus, Ohio.  While in town, I headed over to the old Toledo and Ohio Central station to eat my packed lunch and caught this southbound Norfolk Southern train of covered hoppers.

As you know from watching the Deshler cam, there is rarely a dearth of action there.  Things may quiet down for an hour or two, but the next thing you know you'll have three trains at once.

I'm sure I'll be back down there next summer.  In the meantime, the cam is usually up on the ol' home computer.

Yeah, I often have the cam up.  It's actually up at the moment on my laptop.  But, nothing beats actually going out railfanning.  Thankfully had good weather the past few days.  Only rain I ran into was heading home from Fostoria from about Carey to Upper Sandusky.  Monday was clear when I went up to Bucyrus.  Yesterday (Wednesday) was clear when I went down to Thurmond, West Virginia (videos with pics coming of that).
