Never knew that Qualcomm made such a device, so I did a little research. Apparently they designed it then sold the Omnitracs product line to an investment group in 2013.

Things could get interesting this weekend. Qualcomm had a major failure of its electronic logging devices Saturday night, putting thousands of drivers on paper logs. Federal law prohibits using paper logs for more than seven days, and rumors floating around that it could take two months to fix the problem. Glad I switched to the new tablet system a couple weeks ago.........

Snow predicted for tomorrow here in Wisconsin, should be just enough to cause a few good wrecks on the interstate...........

As I was preparing to leave the house this morning to head for Syracuse and day two of the train show there, three accidents were dispatched.  I changed my route because one of them would have been on the way.  The other two were on the Interstate and would not have bothered me.

As I approached the interchange to enter the Interstate, I found out why - there was about 3/4" of slush in the road, which had apparently fallen in a very narrow band.

As I made my way down the Interstate, cautiously, as there were several other such bands. Dispatch polled out another accident about two miles south of where I was at the time.  I found it, and after reporting the correct location (the caller was off by a mile and a half), I hit a U turn and went back, arriving with a state trooper right behind me.  No one was hurt, so I went on my way.

Further south, the roads were clear, and the sun even poked out occasionally...

Attendance at the train show wasn't bad, but it was tough to engage the kids (and thus their parents) as the vendor next to us was selling die cast models with LED lights added.  And all those little lights were flashing brightly...

We are recovering from last week's low temperatures--56 degrees here now. My noece who, with her husband, lives near Orange Park, Florida, told that it was 92 degrees there Halloween evening, and she feared the candy she gave out would melt.

Paul already gave you our forecast; we're taking our shift at the Peck House Museum this afternoon.  There's work going on at the Grace Street crossing, but it isn't keeping me from seeing whatever happens by.

We got 1.1 inches of liquid precipitation yesterday, and more this morning before Pat decided to take in the rain gauge (dropping temperatures concerned her a bit). That puts us over twice the normal amount of precipitation here in our area.

Oops, another train coming (probably just the scoot).  Later!

The barometer here has been in free-fall since yesterday around 9AM.

We've gotten a touch of rain - the big threat is the winds later tonight and into tomorrow.

No mention of snow for the immediate future.  With southerly winds (until the low passes - it's currently centered on Cleveland), I don't expect any surprises.

Miserable rain-snow mix most of yesterday, we actually set a record for snowfall yesterday (1.2 inches).  More of the same today, hopefully the trick-or-treaters will stay home.

In Kenosha the Thursday evening trick-or-treating has been postponed until Saturday due to weather (2" snow here this morning with more coming).

I'm glad I do not live in NE Utah (west of Wyoming and just south of Idaho)--Peter Sink was the coldest place in the country yesterday: -42. That area has several low spots which seem to suck cold air in.

Looks like Rochelle got dusted...

We were out there early this afternoon, but the snow was gone by then.  So were the trains, for the most part...

We had better luck coming home along the UP...an empty westbound coal-car train by Malta, a westbound manifest at DeKalb, and a westbound blade-runner, also at DeKalb.  The manifest had to be chased, since it had a couple of brand-new cars on it (tall gons, of the type once used for woodchip service).

Pat discovered a recently-opened quilt shop in DeKalb...the tracks are visible through their window (we all stopped to look when the blade-runner went through!).  They were using 60-foot (or maybe 68-foot) TTX cars for this move, five cars for every two blades.

Returned from a two day power outage

Speaking of two-day power outages, almost all of town lost power from Saturday 5:15 AM till Sunday about 3:30 PM.  Olga was a small storm, but it was amazing how many trees got knocked down all over town.

We had some snow Sunday, yesterday, and today--we sent the most of it towards MC. The morning tmperature yesterday was about 20, and about 30 this morning. From what the weatherguessers say, we have used too much heat so far this week, and it is going to be about 12 tomorrow morning.

From the reports as to snowfall at the ski resorts, I though t they would open this week, but they say, "Not yet."

Returned from a two day power outage bugout to find the power back on but Not internet or TV service - thank you Comcastic!  Dots - Sign  Have to reconsider spending $$ on a UPS when the CableCo can't keep their upstream equipment online like wireline telcos can (oops, used to, don't have AT&T 'service' to compare).

Aside from a little snow near Lake Tahoe, no rain and very low humidity are the current conditions here in NorCal. Another offshore 'wind event' is starting today from north to south, causing the PoCos to shut off power in some areas. No SMART (SonomaMarin) rail service today due to non-functional grade crossing gates.

That nasty fire in Sonoma county barely has any containment, but a huge Thank You to fire crews coming in from all over the west and even midwest. Once the winds calm down around Thursday, the large water dropping aircraft can be used again.

Snowstorm #2 showed-up about 6 hours early, already dumped 6" on us in about 8 hours. (Office is about 1/3 full today) The wind is playing games with the light rail catenary across the freeway with sporadic flashes of bright blue making life interesting. Not interested in going home until the liabilities get off the road or are already in the ditches. Lots of multiple car bumper car incidents in the last 24 hours with chains being allowed in-town.

Halloween is going to be interesting.

Just for Joe, I got a retracement job near Genoa, OH in the Firelands dumped on me.  (Another PennCentral/USRA headache that never was CR)...

Snow in central Iowa tonight.  Looks like about 3/4 of an inch on the grass.  It's not sticking to the cement, though.  Supposed to be sunny and a high of 40 tomorrow.

Sixty-one degrees here in the north country today.  It's supposed to get colder for the weekend, but I don't recall any snow in the forecast, and as Skywarn coordinator, I get the skinny straight from the forecasters.

In fact, highs are supposed to be in the 50's all week, with lows just down into the 30's.  There's rain and wind to be expected, though, so we'll see what plays out.

Hopefully it's decent for the weekend - maybe a threat of rain - so folks attend the train show in Syracuse.

It continues to snow here. Halloween will be about the only clear day during the week. Still weeding out the bad winter drivers (lots of 'em do not understand ice.) The ground was warm, so the pavement was the last to frost over, about 16 hours after it started to snow. The mountain fires have ceased.

Sub zero in October?

Duncan, the weatherscottie, is having a ball plowing snow with his nose and rolling in it.
