Don't leave your SW-8 parked in Brooklyn.

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

If you read the except provided you get a good flavour of the book.

I remember elevator operators very well ( as described in the reading) and if they went on strike they could effectively shut down the city and commerce.

Almost always uniformed, those smooth rolling lattice doors behind the main door and the brass fixtures. Fascinating as a kid. Must have been a long long day.

The B&O Building in Baltimore, before CSX sold it off, had elevators with operators.  The Elevator Operators were the nominal source of the reliable rumors of up coming changes in the corporation.  Senior Officials talk, talk, talk just as if the Elevator Operators didn't exist and could not comprehend the conversations they were having.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

It's interesting that Anacostia & Pacific is the parent company of both New York & Atlantic and South Shore Freight.  Both are the freight spinoffs of what have long been primarily commuter-oriented railroads and have a symbiotic relationship with the transit agencies that own the property and operate the passenger trains.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
