Operation appears to be very labor intensive and the ship is registered in Singapore.

Why not just keep the rail traffic on rail rather than ferrying it across the Gulf?

This has been going on for many years. In fact, it has been so successful that the ferries were double-decked. Their original configuration was single deck.

There must be enough savings in time and money to make profitable. Avoid Houston, Laredo, etc.

However, I have always wondered if NS merged with KCS if the ferry traffic would dissipate because then there would be single-line service between Mexico and 2/3 of the US population.

The reason this service exists is because it serves a port in the SE of Mexico on the Ferrosur Railway. It would not be competitive serving ports further north. Handling up to 115 cars every four days isn't that much capacity. By rail it probably would take a railcar four days to get from Coatzacoalcos to the US border. Ferrosur is a mountain railway with stiff grades and lots of tunnels, and then you need to Interchange the car to either Ferromex or KCSdeM.

The Lake Michigan service didn't die for lack of a boat.  As a matter of fact, the last carferry (SS Badger) is still operating across the lake, although for autos, trucks, and the occasional wind turbine.

Yes. If it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid.

This sea service has been operating for years.  It apparently works well to get rail cars to and from southern Mexico.  You got a problem with that?
