The very same crossing on the busy highway between Prince Albert and Saskatoon yesterday. White out conditions, no gates, speed limit 120kmh on the highway, trains come barreling through full tilt.

Ive written on this previously. With the increase of oil shipments down from Edmonton this place is a big accident waiting to happen.

Text to me from my friend Rhonda

This picture was taken in the worst weather, I couldn't see the blinking red lights. I only saw them after I stopped.
(The weather was snowing and windy in all directions. I Heard the train and slowed down to 20k and saw the car immediately in front of me. The pic doesn't show the massive storming around me. When I took pic I couldn't see the train, or the lights). I was amazed at the pic. It just looked like a grey cloudy winter day. This Is Not the Reality At All.

I have never seen a video that so well captures a high speed derailment.  It is interesting that you can see several cars on the ground, but still coupled and in line for a few seconds until the jackknifing begins.

It looks like the derailment began by cars derailing to the side of the track opposite of the stopped vehicles.  If that had derailed to the side nearest the vehicles, it could have easily killed every driver there waiting; regardless of what the freight cars were carrying.

The public has little idea what is in the cars, and the only thing they really have seared in their minds is the huge flaming wrecks on the RR.  Running is self-preservation.

I can't believe the people leaving. They have warm vehicles for someone if they come running out needing help.

The cars that bailed are being very cautious and not staying.  This accident is one reason that we always stop way back from an activated crossing.  And look for a way to bail if necessary.

I've wrote about that crossing before. You have to go that way if your going North to Prince Albert and way further North up to my town. Trains comes barrelling through, no gates and the speed limit on the Hwy is 120. I call it nuts.

Agreed.  Wish the woman with the view of the other side had stayed a little longer.

Agreed, Aussi.

Wish both videos were longer!

From e-mail.

More.

29 cars and one unit off, behind car 26. Train had 155 cars.

Thank You.

Great video links, NDG.  Thanks.  I had only seen the second one, when the derailment had already started.  The CTV Calgary dashcam video should be pretty valuable in determining the cause.

The CBC site has a different photo, which shows a small road trailer sitting in the field close to the debris field.  It seems undamaged, so a road vehicle was probably not involved, but when the pileup is by a grade crossing it made me wonder.

Hope no one is hurt.

Some more photos:

It appears that the front door is locked on the 2699, which would likely mean it was a DP unit operating in the middle of the train, which also means that the train was most likely a lot longer than 50 cars.

For trivia buffs, this is the same locomotive that blew a cylinder head off in Louisiana a few years ago, with the piston crashing through the roof of someone's house:

A shame some of those nice, new P&H hoppers have met a premature end.

A CN train has derailed just north of Saskatoon.

It happened Tuesday just after 9 a.m. at Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road.

Saskatoon Fire Department officials said the roughly 50-car long train was carrying grain.

Some of the cars are on fire and officials said there is a possible diesel leak.

There is no word yet if anyone was injured.

Warman RCMP said the highway is blocked in both directions. Drivers should avoid the area and look for alternative routes. Dalmeny police said one alternate route is Highway 12 and Highway 305.
