Give me an "E"
Posted by JoeKoh on Thursday, December 30, 2004 4:13 PM
While picking up Matt at his pre-school we saw CSX with leased power.2 hclx sd 40-2s and a burlington northern E unit 9923. It was heading east. I dont know if it made a turn in Deshler Fostoria or if its going on to Willard.
good luck[:)]

If it's heading towards Akron for a rebuild it would make my day. Who would be doing the rebuilding in Akron. I now of a place in Kent that rebuilds engines but I know the cuyahoga valley scenic railroad has an engine shop too. If anyone knows anything more I would love to get photos of this historic engine. Either way I'll go out this week on my day off and search the yards and the rebuilders for it.

By interesting coincidence I was just looking at my slides of railfanning Eola and Hinsdale in the late 1980s on days when I caught lots of BN E units on the Metra trains. I also got a tape recording somewhere of one of them - they sounded great.

Macguy, where and when was the picture of 9923 above taken? How sad, I remember very well the sights and sounds of these wonderful and proud units charging down the triple track where I live with commuters many times every day. We all miss them!

Could there be a relationship to the Disneyland "E" ticket being the top ride in the old days when you bought a ticket book, got rationed out limited rides, with the least being the horse pulled main street trolley or regular trolley?

The E8A/B ATSF was a great sight heading off to Chicago past my apartment in Arcadia, California in 1970, with the shiney Budd cars, I have a N scale version of that train, my favorite, but I love my PA/PB units and SP trains as well. Now I live in Illinois, 120 miles from the other end of that run.

Earlier this year, I placed two MARC E-9's, the MARC 91 and 92 [both ex BN E-9's] into the shop at Baltimore. The shop man said they were looking into rebuilding them for control cars in MARC's push-pull service. After about a week, they were pulled out of the shop and put back on a back track where they'd been moldering for the last seven or eight years. I assumed they were too far gone, as nothing more was done until a few weeks ago. Now they're on a different back track on the other side of the shop; maybe it's because the track they were on was needed for something else, I don't know.

The bottom line is that back here in the east, E-9's have been moved around, too. The plot THICKENS!

Heard today that quite a few of the old BN/Metra E-9 units had been at the old Chrome Crankshaft facility in Rock Island (I believe this had been the old Rock Island RR shops). Anybody know if any more are there?

9923 was in the Willard engine terminal on 1/1/05. It may be going to LTEX in Yougstown. 9922 is already there.

I got the picture off of http://www.railpictures.net

Here's the link to the picture:

Apparently it was taken July 15, 2003 at the CN yard (ex-IC) in Markham, Illinois, USA.

Here's another old picture of it in commuter service.

I sure hope it's headed for a rebuild!
