First Time Railfanning
Posted by Lukestang_59 on Thursday, October 18, 2018 1:03 PM

I plan on going railfanning or the first time later today on the UP’s double-tracked mainline through Elkhorn, Nebraska. I’ll probably just be usin my phone since it’s all I can use right now, and I may only be able to be down there for an hour or two. Any genral advice for me?

Be safe above all and stay off railroad property.

"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

If you are going to take photos, limit yourself to just one per train... it is a lot more fun to be seeing the train for real than to be looking at it through the viewfinder.

Or just put the camera phone down and enjoy the moment.

I hope you enjoyed yourself!  It looks like most of the advice (and it was all good!) came too late for your trip, so I hope you'll report back and tell us how you felt about the experience.
