Reporting Mark KOAX for Coca Cola

Hi

Anyone here see traffic going into Coca Cola plants.  I would like  to see photos of cars with the reporting mark they use    KOAX

Also where do I locate an all time roster for this reporting mark?

You just happen to have a freight car historian paying attention.  Here's what I have right now (I'll have to get some updating done to my pages one of these times!).  There were no Coca-Cola cars before 1971, and the visions of toy-train sets with cars (and locomotives) adorned in red and white should be disarded immediately. 

All cars owned by Coca Cola USA were built by, and originally lettered (black data only on light gray) in the style of, the General American Transportation Corporation.

The tank cars of Coca Cola U.S.A. were divided into two orders: series 18001-18131 and 28132-28166.

 

Cars in KOAX series 18001-18131 were removed from the roster during 1986. Following are the quantities of cars transferred to subsequent owners (specific numbers are not known):

—To the ADM Transportation Company: 60 cars, ADMX 14940-14999 (see ADM listing). Fully repainted.

—To the General American Transportation Corporation: 20 cars, GATX 58151-58170 (see GATC listing). Not repainted.

—To Cargill, Incorporated: 50 cars, CRGX 4466-4515 (see Cargill list- ing). Not immediately repainted.

Cars in KOAX series 28132-28166 (with the exception of KOAX 28137 or 28138) were transferred in 1987 to Cargill, Incorporated. These cars were relettered and renumbered, without being immediately repainted, to CRGX series 4719-4752 (see Cargill listing). Renumbering appears to have been in order.

All covered hopper cars of Coca Cola USA were of the Airslide type, and were restricted to sugar service. The first two digits of the car numbers indicate the year in which the cars were purchased.

The following cars (25) from KOAX series 71000-71037 were transferred in early 1985 to the Seaboard System Railroad, Incorporated (these cars were relettered and renumbered in order, without being repainted, to SBD series 201650-201674; see CSX Transportation, Incorporated, listing): 71000, 71002, 71004, 71009- 71013, 71015- 71024, 71027, 71029- 71031, 71033, 71037.

The following cars (probably all remaining) from KOAX series 71000-71037 (10), 73038-73059 (21), 75060-75089 (26), 77090-77102 (13), and 78103-78122 (19) were transferred in mid-1985 to U.S. Rail Services, Incorporated (these cars were relettered and renumbered in order, without being repainted, to RUSX series 9401-9489):    71001, 71005, 71007, 71014, 71026, 71028, 71032, 71034- 71036,

73038- 73046, 73048- 73059,

75060- 75061, 75064- 75068, 75070- 75077, 75079- 75089,

77090- 77102,

78103- 78118, 78120- 78122.

In early 1992 these cars were transferred to PLM International, Incorporated; they were relettered PCSX, without being repainted or renumbered.

The following cars (70) from PCSX series 9401-9489 were transferred by 2007 to Railroad Technologies, Incorporated (these cars were rebuilt to high-side gondola cars, fully repainted, and assigned to the Norfolk Southern Railway Company [relettered and renumbered to random numbers within NS series 202000-202170]): 9401- 9402, 9405- 9407, 9409- 9413, 9416, 9418, 9420, 9424- 9425, 9427, 9429, 9431- 9447, 9450- 9451, 9453- 9467, 9469- 9476, 9478- 9479, 9481- 9489.

Wow, what a reply.  Everything I wanted to know.  It seems their fleet was limited to tank, and airslide hoppers.

Now to find some more photos   I have seen a lot of ADMX cars, I can now cross reference some of them to the original CC   KOAX cars.

Sorry about that--those would be files similar to this one, and all you'd get is a cross-reference to the information here.  I deleted a bunch of those, but must have missed these.

No web address--they're just word-processing files on my computer.
