Now let me explain how advertising works for niche publications or websites. An advertiser like Plasser approaches an ad distributor who offers x amount of readership among a potential market. Then distributes the ad to the appropriate publications. Plasser has no account with Trains Magazine directly, they get their ad in Trains via a distributor. Likewise a lot of the ads you see on the Internet on say a website like www.weather.com are there via an ad distributor. Weather.com and Trains are way to small to have a full fledged Ad sales team so they make use of marketing companies for most of their ads.
You can launch your own website and own magazine and do the same thing. You do not really need an Ad salesforce......the marketers will come to you because the more viewership you offer them, the higher price they can charge their advertisers.
To your original question. Trains is viewed by both railroaders and non-railroaders, there is no real measurement of what % makes up the subscriber base because with total subscribers under 100k..........nobody really cares. It is a drop in the bucket as far as advertisers are concerned money wise to ad Trains Magazine as an advertising outlet. Now if Trains had a subscriber base of say 10 million, then yes folks would care what % were railroaders or railroad related as that would be a significant spend for advertising.

Florist is the North side of Milwaukee in Milwaukee County, Waukesha is probably a good 20 miles away in Waukesha County. The two counties are next to each other but to drive from one address to the other during a non-peak time will take you at least 40 min at freeway speeds. So it is more than just a few miles up the road.
There isn't any reason. Progressive Railroading is a professionally-oriented magazine aimed at railroad management and Trains is primarily oriented to the hobbyist.
and despite Progressive Railroadings office being at Progressive Railroading 2100 W. Florist Milwaukee, WI 53209 and Trains being a few miles up the road in Waukesha WI Pat said that he almost never talks to Jim Wrinn Editor of Trains except at conventions. Anybody here want to invite both these guys for a beer the next time you are in Beer Town aka Milwaukee ?
