Man hit by train on Monday, charged with murder on Friday.

http://www.kcci.com/article/29-year-old-man-charged-with-murder-in-death-of-baby-girl/16562154

I was in the yard office the day it happened, waiting to go west.  The train that struck this person was behind mine.  The crew that I relieved said they saw him but he wasn't on the tracks then.  In retrospect, they probably saw him while he decided whether to go out in front of a train.  I heard the whole thing happen over the radio.  The train reported they had struck him, the conductor walking back and finding him.  (It's my understanding that this person's presence near the tracks had been reported and trains alerted to his presence.  So trains weren't going through at track speed.)  Then the dispatcher, crew and local RR oficials conferring about how best to get emergency personnel to the location.

Friday we find out why he was acting strange.  He was charged in the death of his 2 month old daughter.

Jeff, it is horrible that anyone should, in any way, take the life of an innocent baby. I feel for the mother of the child.

Without being cynical or heartless, I'll observe that once again the drama of life plays out on the stage of the railroad.  Some of us have no use for the fictional dramas on TV - we get all we need daily during our jobs.

My condolences to the crew involved - they didn't need it either.

Have people ALWAYS been this crazy and because of the old forms of communication no one outside of those immediately involved ever heard of the happenings?  Or has current civilization 'jumped the shark' to see if one crazy can out do another crazy and they all get reported in near real time around the world.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I suspect it's a little of both.  Used to be that neither of those stories would have made the news much outside their own area, and even combined might only have deserved an inch or so in the bigger papers in their region.  Broadcast outlets have to focus on what counts for them - they don't have time to cover such stories outside their market unless it's something spectacular.

Too bad the train wasn't going a little faster.  Dirtbag.

I could call him something worse, but there should be some decorum here.

I suspect we do hear more about such things due to improved communications.

Having said that, how anyone could intentionally kill a two month old baby is beyond my comprehension.  I guess "Crazy" is the right word.

Some years ago I was reading a post by a retired Chicago police officer on another forum.  He opined that one out of 10 people on the street needs to be institutionalized.  He may have been right.

I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

The incidence of very young children being killed  by whoever is supposed to be taking care of them is horrible.

From what I have read locally, many times the person who is taking care of the child is attempting to stop the child's crying and resorts to roughness to convince the child that it should not cry. In many instances, the person is a man who is not married to the mother even though he may be the father of the child.

Shaken baby syndrome is very common in these cases.
