Buckingham Branch RR System Map,
Carrys Amtrak as stated between Orange - Clifton Forge.

Another tidbit about the route from Orange south and west--the track from Orange to Gordonsville was constructed by the Orange and Alexandria to gain access to Charlottesville by using the Virginia Central west of Gordonsville. After the Orange and Alexandria built its own track to Charlottesville, the Orange-Gordonsville section was sold to the C&O--which used it to gain entrance to Washington.
Correction: after reading further in Wikipedia, I learned that the NS still owns the Orange-Gordonsville track (even though it has C&O mileposts, and there is a long-term lease to CSX in effect. (And the Buckingham Branch uses it.)

blue streak 1 BaltACD Buckingham Branch operates CSX's 'mountain line' between Richmond and Clifton Forge and from Charlottesville West it is used by Amtrak's Cardinal and I believe it is still signalled and good for 79 MPH track speed where curves permit. BALT? Believe you will want to modify that to include Amtrak uses BBrRR Orange - Gordonsville - Charlottesville.

The Buckingham Branch operates more railroad than Amtrak uses.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
This does not fare well for Federal Infrasture share for railroad dollers.
Semper Vaporo What about the engineer in the lead engine? Was he/she hurt?

News reports say that two crew members were hurt, but don't say who. One news report had said that one of the docs on the train was doing CPR on a "conductor," but I've seen nothing else to that effect.
Just saw an aerial shot that showed the lead locomotive still sitting where it stopped, with the rest of the train gone, back to Charlottesville, per news reports.

The Buckingham Branch handles the Cardinal between Orange, Virginia to Clifton Forge. There is no connecting track in Charlottesville that can be used without backing up.
samfp1943Briars Hurt! I probably will need a wheel barrow load of them, soon. Carl; In reference to your locating the point of the AMTRAK collision today with the Special to the "Greenbrier" .. I saw a report as short time ago that mentioned that this accident occured on the Buckingham Branch RR,ROW, and it was noted that the speed was approx 70 mph (?). I am not certain that, based one the 'media's' usual information about railroads; that that the 'Special's' speed is accurate(?). Also, not sure of the location of the Buckingham Branch RR; beyoned the fact that it is in the Va./W.Va. area. The speed sounds wrong for an operation on what might be termed a 'secondary' line(?). Of course, there has been quite a bit of film and coverage- due to the Congressional Delegation's involvement. Apparently, the leading unit AMTRAK #4 was dropped off at the scene, and the train was returned to Charlottsville by the trailing, rear unit.

Additionally CSX uses the Buckingham Branch route to move empty hoppers from Newport News back to the mines through Clifton Forge. Loaded coal trains use the James River route through Richmond due to better grades for the loaded trains.

They make Band-aid patches, Sam and Johnny (briar...patch...get it?).Ronceverte is the name you may have been looking for, Johnny--it's where the Greenbrier Subdivision used to separate from the C&O main line for all intents and purposes (the junction was actually named Whitcomb Junction). It's where the main line, coming from the east, "discovered" the Greenbrier River, thence following it down to its joining the New River, then the Kanawha River, making for a nice route all the way down to Charleston.C&O's name for its 2-8-4s was "Kanawha", and its 4-8-4s were "Greenbriers".

The scene of the incident is reported as near Crozet, VA. Finally found a news source that gave an exact location: 38.07733 -78.71674 It appears there were locomotives at both ends of the train.
More coverage: https://www.statter911.com/2018/01/31/breaking-republican-train-wreck-not-metaphor/ There is/was a live feed on that site. Interesting to hear the various misconceptions and assumptions from the talking heads.

Balt,
As the old saying goes "Garbage in, garbage out".
Nah, no one has ever had to deal with that except when dealing with idiots who couldn't get their data right.

Deggesty It is sad. Oh, Sam, the resort hotel is the Greenbrier; it is located near the Greeenbrier River (and the next town west, after Caldwell, on the CSX has the French form of Greenbrier as its name)--and the county is Greenbrier. I hope I have not scratched you too hard.

1/31/2018 .. FBC/Varney: News Alert, "...Train Carrying Congressional delegation to Retreat @ Greenbriar Resort has hit a dump truck, some passengers injured...." [no details furnished]
P.S. One deceased is being reported at the scene(related to truck that was struck(?), location was apparently, Crozet, Va, area)
Good Grief!

It will be at the Greenbriar Resort ( White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. ) starting 02/01/2018.
So I think, that puts to be this issue of what's happening at that Resort!
Could very well be, but then, the vacant cabinet member could go anywhere.
Just realized that the state of the union address is coming up. Maybe this is about the vacant cabinet member going there ? Could be a mis direction ?
I don't know. When I saw that show on the White Sulfer Springs bunker, and realized they didn't care who knew about it at this point, it made me wonder just what they replaced it with.
Kind of like when the Air Force retired the SR-71. I wondered what they replaced THAT with. Not that we need to know.
In the past year, have noticed a couple of re-broadcasts, of the 'tour' of the WSSpWV Underground,Congressional Site {Refuge(?)} There at the Resort.
It seemed to be, being maintained, in what looked to be pristine, and readily useable conditions(?). Maybe someone in Washington realized it was a potentially valid 'fall back' ;ocation? And they were just not going to walk away from those millions of dollars spent in creating that 'bunkered' location? Just a thought.
Has anyone noticed any RR activity or track upgrading at the resort at White Sulphur Springs, WV ? Following notice sent and wonder what official is going there.
