All of that about the restaurant in the old South Shore cars is correct. The date they were moved there would have been soon after the first stainless-steel cars arrived and "bumped" them. They were put there for the guy's restaurant, and it lasted a lot less time than has elapsed since they've been vacant, or at least closed to the public.

I am a UK train watcher and have been watching the Chesterton cams for about 9 months now, very interesting and a good variety of traffic and Railroads represented.
The adds can be a bit annoying but i will cough up shortly and pay for access for a couple of months so as not to have the adds!!But they are good cams.
Chesterton provides a pleasant scene too, plenty of train watchers visiting.
This may seem cranky but i have even had a walk around the town courtesy of Street View, makes me feel as if i have been there!
Don.
I ate at that restaurant in the South Shore cars when it was operating. That was at least 20 years ago.
Carl,
Those cars have been there for some time. I've been watching those cams for a couple of years. Nothing moving on the north side. They've been parked for a long time.

Hmmm...they must have restocked the railroad section since I was there last. There are four South Shore cars across the tracks from the B&B. They were a restaurant when they were first moved there, but didn't last more than a few years. It was decent food...pretty good view, too.The place seems to be vacant, and hasn't seen much action in many, many years now. I wish somebody could come up with something useful for the place and get those cars back to orange!
yes it is a SS car.
Also, across the street to the south is an incredible book store - O'Gara & Wilson Ltd. which is all used books, including a very large selection of railroad books.
Their address is 223 Broadway, Chesterton, In.
If you go watch trains at Riley's, step across the street to the book store.

Is that a former South Shore line car parked across the tracks on the "east" cam?
Thanks
The commercials are the cost of viewing a very good "free" service. I have been watching this almost daily for over a year. Yes, the commercials often get in the way of the passage of a train, but again...that is the "cost".
I work at home and the website provides great "background noise" for me. I live only about 10 miles from Chesterton and am familar with the operations on the line...not from actual railfanning, but primarily from viewing and listening on the scanner.
One can purchase a premium membership, about $100 per year which offers not only Chesterton, but a number of other locations.
The location at Rileys Railhouse has become a gathering spot for visiting railfans, as almost everyday one will see folks waiting there passing trains. For awhile there was a mother who would take her son to watch the trains. They would get out of their van and wave at the train....the son was probably 5 years old.
My guess is there are more than 75 per day. NS runs a pretty tight schedule and after a few days one begins to be aware of the flow of trains. The intermodals are very tightly scheduled, as are a number of general freights.

Railserve just lists the same railstream link- I get the same results, a live feed with occasional "commercials". Not sure how you're getting away with not receiving them.

I was just watching one of the cameras now- could hear a train approaching (first one I would've seen), when suddenly the feed stopped for a "commercial". Missed the engines and most of the train (fast-moving WB COFC). Incredibly annoying.

Semper Vaporo Can you share the link to them?

I've recently been monitoring twin cameras located in Chesterton Indiana, which is about 45 miles east of Chicago. They have about 75 trains a day which pass these cameras. It's the Norfolk Southern railroad.
