Have you been following the Rochelle Webcam discussion at the head of this forum?   There was considerable discussion about maintenance some time back.   You may have to go back months or even a year or so.

Earl,

It's the amount of tonnage that crosses those diamonds each day that determines the amount of maintenance they will require. The Rochelle diamonds are on two heavily traveled mainlines with heavily laden trains. Each car could be loaded to 286,000 pounds which translates to 71,500 pounds per axle. Each wheelset must jump a gap of a few inches in the diamond that accomodates the crossing track. When they hit the other side of the gap the rail takes a serious beating and almost constant welding is needed to keep it in proper condition. That is one reason you often see maintenance personnel there. The constant pounding also affects ballast, so occasionally a tamper has to visit the diamond.

There are OWLS (One Way Low Speed) diamonds that allow for continuous rail on one track while the other rides up ramps to cross the main. They would not be practical at Rochelle because they would limit one railroad to a ten MPH speed limit while crossing them

I wondered what was going on, since I had not been on the site for several days.  Thought maybe there had been a derailment.  Do you know the reason for all the sand--or what appears to be sand?    DLW
