MU Hose Gladhand Orientations
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 13, 2004 2:09 PM
I work with the diesel service department of a local railroad museum. It was noticed that the MU hose gladhands of many of our locomotives were inconsistantly oriented (i.e. if you compared one locomotive to another, they weren't consistant). I just looked at some photos I had taken a while back, and am able to get the orientations for the inner 3 hoses from that, but the sander hoses, which don't appear on modern locomotives are still illusive (sp?).

Does anybody have a link to a site that specifically defines this? (Actually a site that defines it for ALL the hoses would be best.)

If someone happens to know the answer, that would be helpful, but what I would ideally want would be a link to some sort of "official" reference.

From the photo I studied, here is what I have found so far:

Starting from the inside and LOOKING TOWARD the locomotive:

Brake pipe: opening is toward the LEFT

OK, now the MU hoses:

Main Reservoir: both openings are toward the RIGHT
Actuate: both openings are toward LEFT
Application & Release (Brake Cylinder): both openings are toward LEFT
Sanders: both openings toward ?????

Thanks for your help!
