UP, BNSF, and now MRL Closed in North Idaho
Posted by Bruce Kelly on Friday, March 17, 2017 11:01 AM

Add MRL to the list of main lines closed due to weather-induced issues in north Idaho. This morning, an empty coal train hit a washout at Kootenai, ID, just east of Sandpoint. MRL says 50-60 empties and one locomotive derailed but remain upright. No injuries.

Latest reports from UP and BNSF on their closures:

The Inland Northwest is quickly becoming a gigantic parking lot for trains in both directions.

Just saw Amtrak 8 fly by Hauser Yard. No.7 is just passing Bonners Ferry. They should meet somewhere close to Sandpoint.

Another late Amtrak 7 through north Idaho this morning. Since the majority of UP's Hinkle-Eastport line is currently dead while work trains and crews deal with the slide north of Moyie Springs, BNSF is detouring some of its westbounds on the UP from Sandpoint south. First one, a manifest, just coming into Spokane now.

Late No.8 by Hauser, ID, about half an hour ago. Being held at Cocolalla while track ahead at Algoma is inspected.

Saw two EB and one WB near Quincy this afternoon. One of the eastbound trains had an NS as a DPU.

Amtrak is holding at Spokane and Whitefish, again. If a bus bridge isn't available, there might be another meeting of the Builders in northern Idaho sometime today.
