Industry Insider Pop Up
Posted by MikeFF on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 1:05 PM

What is this?  I get it, once in a while, on log in.  It has no Trains logo or other idenfication, so no way to know if it is legitimate or not.

Mike, what is it you are puzzled over; you did not show it in your post.

That's a good-looking avatar.

When I log in, I get a pop-up that says, "Be and industry insider, sign up for weekly newsletter."  No indication of what newsletter is or who is the sponsor.  I'm assuming it is Trains, but there is not indication that it is not a third party.  Avatar was in the engineer's seat of a VIA FP-45 in Montreal prior to departure on the Ocean several years ago.  I wanted to take the engineer's picture and he said, "Come on up and I'll take yours."

Assuming you are using Winders (I don't know about MAC or LINUX, etc.) if you right click on something in a browser window you will get a "context menu" and in that menu is a selection "Properties" (usually the bottom entry).  Click that entry and you will get a dialog box that should list the Address (URL).  That will tell you what server company is hosting the image or text you clicked on.

Most of the time on the Trains forums you will see something that begins with:

"http : // cs . trains . com / blah blah blah"

Note: even if the URL is not of the company you expect it does NOT mean it is not a legitimate item, but it can sometimes help you determine if it IS legit.  i.e.: Trains Magazine might be in a contract with some other company to store something for Trains, or maybe the other company is paying Trains to call something from their server, but if it is "Trains dot com", then it is from the Trains dot com server.

I get the same Pop up. And I suspect that it is from Trains but have chosen so far to just close it and move on.

I've been getting the Industry Insider showing up in my Email.  I have not opened it as Outlook has been putting it in the Junk Mail folder.

I get it regularly when I access the Newswire.  I just delete it and highball...it doesn't bother me again until the next session.

Carl, I feel the same way; delete it and get to the news.

I'm glad to hear you and Pat are having a good trip, and that Linda is moving a long.
