Ilinois Central 6072 in Georgia

Today I saw IC 6072, which apparently is an SD40-2R. What is the R? It was headed north through Elberton, GA toward South Carolina on the CSX line. I know that all railroads have a lot of run though power, especially CSX, but this one was the first of its kind that I have ever seen. I’ll try to get the pics up when they are developed.

Also, could someone give me a quick rundown on the IC? I believe that it is controlled by CN. Is that correct? If so are they a somewhat autonomous railroad or was it a complete buyout?

Thanks,
Doug

The "R" stands for rebuilt I think but IC 6072 isn't an SD40-2R it is an SD40-2 ex-UP 3844.There are only 3 SD40-2s in the 6000 series and those are 6030,6032,and 6072.The SD40-2R numbers are 6000 to 6018,6034,and 6050 to 6071.

For Your other question I am not totally sure if CN bought IC completely but many people call them CN/IC so I guess it wasn't a complete buyout.

Thanks for responding. I got the information about it being an "R" from this roster: http://www.ole.net/~rcraig/IC.HTML
