Drove down to Thurmond, West Virginia at the end of last month to take in the scenery and hopefully catch a few trains.
On the way down, I took a little detour due to the rest area on the West Virginia Turnpike that I normally stop at for lunch was closed for reconstruction.

So, I got to Thurmond, and not hearing anything on the scanner, I took a series of pics around the town, trying to match them to scenes from the 1987 movie Matewan, which had many scenes filmed in and around Thurmond. I then do a little talk, and then the westbound Cardinal arrived about 25 minutes late to do a station stop. I later heard that the train was 9 hours late getting to Chicago due to the train hitting a downed tree in Indiana, taking out the horn and windshield on the locomotive. Thankfully nobody was hurt.

The drive home was relatively uneventful.

Even though I only saw one train on the entire trip, I wouldn't say it was a wasted trip or anything like that. It was a beautiful drive, and it's nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life from time to time.
