Thanks to Jim Wrinn, and Staff; To George Hinchcliffe, whose narrative, and first-hand tales brought to life, an historical event;whose story that was drifting into the mists of time past.
I was fortunate to have gotten a brief glimpse of the 4472, and its train while I was on my way through Alabama, enroute home after my tour in RVN.
Thanks for the stories, photos, and map!
This issue is a 'keeper' for me.
I greatly enjoyed the account of the visit of the Flying Scotsman.
In the fall of 1969, I was able to take two pictures of the train as it went through Tusacaloosa. I was on a bridge that crossed the main line of the AGS, and got a picture of the train as it approached and and as it went on its way.
In July of 1972, my bride and I were in San Francisco (on our way from Ogden to Salt Lake City by train), and we were able to go through the train. There were not many other people visiting the train, so we were not hurried at all in our visit. It was a truly pleasant experience to notonly see the train up close, but to go through it.

OK Johnny, that requires more explanation. Utah to Utah via California, please?

Scenic route?
Norm
In 1972, there was no rail passenger service betwen Ogden and Salt Lake City. We wanted to go to San Francisco and to ride the Rio Grande Zephyr--and we did both.
Yes, it was scenic--the Sierra Nevada, and going "through, not around, the Rockies," though we did go around the Rockies on the UP.

What happened to those young men who were building those memories, and living their lives? " ...Too soon old, too late, smart..." As my father used to say.
I can relate to your trip as I took one of my ALL ABOARD AMERICA fare trips in the 70's where I took Amtrak's SFZ to Denver, Over nighted in a hotel, RGZ to Salt Lake City, the RIO Grande's van to Ogden and the SFZ to Oakland. And yes, I had Rocky Mountain Trout in the Diner on the RGZ. I had taken my family on the CZ back in 1968 and fell in love with the CZ. Had the drawing room in the observation car. I love the Budd short domes with the 360 degree view. Much better than the Sightseer Amtrak cars. Only place to ride them now is on the VIA Canadian and Skeena.
