Symposium on Rail Abandonment
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 5:44 PM
Mentioned earlier, this symposium is at DePaul University in Chicago on Saturday, December 11. Here's more information and a registration form. I hope to see (or meet!) a few of you there.

Mark, that link didn't work on my computer, but it might just be me.

It doesn't really matter, since I won't be in Chicago on Saturday anyway. If I was, I would certainly come out to hear you speak. Give the speach in the Twin Cities, and I would be there with bells on.[swg]

It works[:D]

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Mark-

Sounds terrific. Wish I could be there. Any chance this will be available on any other dates? This is one I'd like to see.

Uh, well, we will know if it is "terrific" after the fact!

I wouldn't know if it will happen again. Prof. Schwieterman might.

Will the syposium be taped or otherwise recorded. What books does the professor have out?

Can't make it, Mark--have to be to work by 1500. Wanna come out to Proviso afterwards?

Prof. Schwieterman now has a second vol. of this work out - covering western roads. I work at DePaul and hope to make this.

Might your forum name indicate you have prolems with Microsoft, thereby slightly prejudicing your opinion? Or did your problems with Microsoft result in your forum name? If you insist on being a part of a minority (MAC, LINUX), you must be willing to accept the inconveniences associated with that choice.

I know Microsoft products have security holes so large you could drive a train through them, but it is sort of like our president; like it (him) or not, we're stuck with it (him).

Just because MAC's are much better engineered and Linux is so much better written, doesn't mean they will become more popular. Look what happened to Beta video tapes; they had a much higher 'lines of resolution' count, and yet VHS won out. Do you know why? Because consumers misused and confused the terms VHS and VCR, and the VHS had a longer recording time per tape--never mind the image quality was terrible.

Microsoft will remain the leader because it's marketing and products are aimed at the "lowest common denominator' of computer experience (i.e. XP Home). Unfortunately.

You think of all places, people would be nice to Bill Gates on here. Rumor is, he is a pretty big train fan and many excursion/museums write him for loans.

I don't doubt his flaws--like any man or any company--but there is something in human nature to always gun at the guy on top. I think that is an ubberly sad aspect of our existence that has hamstrung the advancement of mankind on more than one occassion.

Hey cnw:

What is the book about? DOes it deal with specific abandonments in selected cities/rail lines, detailing losses of jobs, economic situations, etc?

If so, that sounds interesting.

Sure wish I could make it Saturday.

I'm saying all this with a smile on my face, so please do not misinterpret this as an attack upon you personally.

But it's funny how in your ru***o marginalize my opinion, you assumed wrong on both of your guesses as to what operating system I must be using. (you did get the "non-windows" bit right, so I'll give you half credit. [;)] )

I was able to download the questionable file, open it with a rather liberal text editor, scrape off the Microjunk gobbledy gook, and read the message, just fine....Another member here was not so fortunate.

Using closed standards on the internet, when alternative open standards of equivalent quality are available,....is BS.

([soapbox] People should not be EXPECTED to use windows as a prerequisite to utilizing the internet effectively. By "picking up the candy" Mr Gates nefariously lays out for all the kiddies to use, it builds a dependacy that ultimately lines his pockets. In my not so humble opinion, responsible web stewardship includes putting forth whatever reasonable effort is available to assure that the Redmond menace does not effect propriety onto the peoples internet. [soapbox]

Thankyou![:D]

"Rumors"? Well then by all means! My bad. I heard a rumor that Charlie Manson likes trains too, so perhaps we should forgive him? making that poor old man die in prison when he should be out railfanning seems so unfair. [|)]

Gosh, Bill Gates is comparable to Charlie Manson. My logic is so flawed. Why didn't I see that all along? I can't believe I didn't see that conection.

Both rose to the top of their field, doing what it was they saw to be their mission. [:D]

My actual point was, just because some guy likes trains, doesn't mean all of his "contributions" to society earn automatic validation.

You're excused! You just aren't as in touch with the computer industry as you are with the rail industry.

Ed, search for the title on Amazon.com - it's a nice big read- he profiles communities which have lost all rail service and the subsequent effects - in a nice readable prose - ie not academic jargon/// complete with maps and photos.

...The symposium has about an hour or so to go now at this hour and I'd say many on here are interested to hear how it was recieved....Not just everyone has an interest in railroad abandonment but most of us on here do I'm sure. We hope it went well Mark.

I agree; I have both volumes and they are excellent. As part of my railfanning I track abandoned lines. I stumbled on the first volume when doing a Google search on Smyrna, DE.

...In the Acknowledgments of volume one Mr. Schwieterman was generous enough to include me under the Pennsylvania folks that provided a bit of help....{Quentin Mong}.
